Type 34
STRAP, CAMERA, FIXED-LENGTH OFFSET

Type 34 is a minimalist camera shoulder strap that is simply dedicated to being a strap. The design shaves off extraneous elements to the bare essential to deliver comfort and smoothness in use. This allows you to wear the camera and take it to your eye level at the decisive moment – without the strap getting in your way or snagging into something in the process.

A Simple Strap that is Simply a Strap

I set out with an obvious but important goal of designing a strap: for it to carry the camera; nothing less, nothing more. The best camera is the one you have with you, so that you can have it ready quickly to capture that decisive moment. I focused on what the truly critical elements of the strap to help support that readiness are; from comfortably wearing and securing the camera when walking around, to quickly bringing the camera to your eye level without the strap getting in the way. I focused on making a strap that is there to secure the camera the entire time, but gets out of your way and out of your mind when the moment comes.

Subtractive and Snag-less Design

I started with simplifying the construction of the strap and rethinking the geometry. Many photographers do not adjust their camera straps after the initial setup, and surprisingly there was very little variation among the length for most photographers. By making a fixed length strap out of one piece leather, I could eliminate bulky adjuster components and make a strong and resilient strap that has minimal components. The shoulder area was not only widened to achieve the optimum balance of comfort and speed, but offset the widening geometry and filleted the edges to further minimize snag. The result is a discreet and minimal strap that not only slides up smoothly when you need to take the photo, but a comfortable one due to the soft oil-treated leather that feels exceptional on the skin for extended periods of time.

Patina that Matches the Camera

I designed the strap so that it is a pleasure to wear and use on a daily basis, for a very long time. The simple one piece leather assembled with minimum components also ensures that the strap will stand to long and heavy use.  The assembly also features multiple bolts to both disperse the weight and have redundancies in case of unlikely but costly accidents. The assembly bolts are very durable and made of corrosion-resistant hardware, and could be made to match the metal and the finish of the camera you choose to use: blackened stainless, blackened brass, or bare stainless. The blackening finish is not a paint finish but an oxidized finish that is typically used on firearms. Both the leather and the hardware will develop a patina and character the more often and the longer it is used, and that patina will match the camera.

Handcrafted in California

Because the strap is designed and made for longevity, each strap is handcrafted in the California studio so that I can ensure that each strap is finished to a high and demanding quality worthy of many years of use. While the TYPE 34 strap is designed with minimum components, there are further considerations such as the protector tab to prevent the stainless steel hardware from rubbing against the camera. The symmetrical bolts also serve as a visual aid to see if the camera is level when shooting from the hip.

*Aniline dyed hides used in the straps and wallets, have a tendency to stain vegetable tanned leather and other porous materials such as paper and untreated wood under prolonged contact, especially when it is new. Please be cautious of storing or having the material touch other materials, especially those with lighter colors.
